"PERHAPS... if you're new to shaving your head" 2007-12-26
By Jonathan Sabin (Ellenton, FL USA)
I've been shaving my head for about 5 years now, (with a Gillette Fusion razor), and I've gotten quite comfortable at it.

My wife bought me the HEADBLADE for xmas, and I gave it a try.

My first thought was that by going with an Atra cartridge, I was taking about 12 steps backward in blade technology, but what the heck... maybe the unique design would make up for it.

My second thought came after I looped the thing around my finger and started to shave. It felt like I was shaving with my feet.

Now I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt, and state that this could very well be due to the fact that my five years of head-shaving has given me "muscle memory" in that I've grown quite accustomed to moving my hands in a certain manner and speed while shaving.

Therefore, using the HEADBLADE "upset" the smooth flow and what I COULD feel was SCRAPING, as opposed to SHAVING. (I quit before I carved through to my skull!)

I will say this however: the HEADBLADE HEADSLICK SHAVE CREAM is absolutely AWESOME, and as much as I've touted the use of Aveeno shave gel for the past few years, I think I've found a replacement.

"novel approach, but average performance" 2007-09-19
By Clinton J. Eliason (Chicago suburb)
I have to agree with the other negative reviews-this razor is tough to maneuver around the ears and really chewed up the back of my head. I would also agree that even the inexpensive three blade disposable razors do an equal, if not better, job than the headblade. Headblade nicked more in one shaving than I have in dozens of times using a traditional two or three bladed razor. The novelty of this razor quickly diminished after multiple nicks. Yes, there's the cool factor, but not at the expense of pieces of scalp washing down the drain. I did like the mentholated shaving cream, though.

"great product for a specific purpose" 2007-06-17
By F. V. Meglio (Providence, RI)
I've read a few of the posts saying that the HeadBlade is a bad product and I can't disagree more.

I am new to headshaving, but I use the HeadBlade Sport and love it. I use Gillette Sensor blades and I get a smooth shave.. You must pay strict attention to the proper method of using this product, go to their website and watch the video, it helps. If you have bad habits from shaving with a standard handle you will have to re-learn and then I doubt you would ever go back to the old way of shaving your head.

I'm not sure why others have had problems with this device, I use it on a daily basis, and haven't had any problems. Sure, I've nicked myself once or twice in the two years I've been using it, but that's to be expected. After a few days, it'll be second nature.

I recommend this to all my friends who shave their head, and I honestly can't imagine doing it any other way.

"Takes Practice and Still Unforgiving" 2009-11-07
By Eric A. Evans
Tried the Headblade a few times. It takes allot of getting used to and I never got good enough at using it to get a good shave. Be careful with this thing. It doesn't take much inattentive shaving to get nicked. This might be a good product if you practice allot with it, but after a really good nick, I went back to a regular razor.

 "HeadLess Blade Head" 2009-10-19
By Bartok Kinski (Prague)
I had a near-sighted Mohican barber named Quepeg in Syracuse NY usually shave my head with an old fashioned razor. Perfect. He eventually retired so I had to look for something else.

I used this primarily for shaving my head, as it gives no room for fleas, ticks, protezoa, or miotianta to live in your hair. Hair is also a great fertilizer for Barbary plants so I was conducive to ecological demands placed upon me by my hippy girlfriend who is bald. I have a year's supply of Baby oil too, so I need to use it up with my bald head.

That said, I cut myself to pieces each time I used it. I looked like a bloody head stump from a horror movie plus I got dizzy looking at the reverse angle in the mirror every time I tried to shave.

Now I just settle for the electric buzzer, which leaves a bit of hair but it's safer, unless you do it while in the shower or in a lighting storm.

"A design that just plain WORKS." 2009-04-18
By M. Myers (Homosassa Springs, FL United States)
I've been a head shaver for quite a few years now. Initially, I used a Gilette Fusion Power, which is a nice razor. It's difficult to use a conventional razor for shaving a head. Too many curves to use with the long handle.

I bought a Headblade when I found it in the clearance bin at Walgreen's. I was skeptical but gave it a try. Am I ever glad I did. This product is fantastic. Others have given good advice----make sure you use a light shaving lotion, not a foam. The Headslick cream is great, and the highly mentholated formula feels good. I use it on my face, too.

If you shave your head and aren't using a Headblade, you're doing it wrong. :-)

 "Ouch" 2007-02-20
By Evan
Ok, my girlfriend seen this gadget called a headblade and figured I just had to have one. I've been shaving my head slick since 1996. Think I did it the first time on my 22nd birthday. Since then, I've gotten used to no barber trips, using a nice clean soap to wash my scalp and enjoying not having to worry about "what if I go bald" that most men worry about.

I use Mach III Turbo, I've tried Quattro, I've tried that M whatever by Gillete that is powered, none work better than basic Mach III, none come close to Mach III Turbo.

I seen where this headblade uses Atra refils. Like others here, I remember using Atra as a teenager. Having said that, I didn't even know that Atra blades were still around. I laughed a little when I read this, "Double blade" first, I am Italian. My hair is very thick. Two blades? Sure, I will try it out.

The first swipe brought blood. Ok, double blade isn't going to work. I check out the site for the headblade where they have triple blade refils. I order a set and put the headblade up until they arrived.

I'm happy to say that with a triple blade this little razor is nice. It makes a smooth path, no jerking movements. I had a terrible cut a few weeks ago because I sneezed while shaving with a normal razor. The blade bent downward and gashed me.

If I had been using this headblade, I don't think that would have happened, since it fits snug around my finger, where as the regular razor was resting in between my fingertips. So, for the most part I recommend this. I would say if you have thick hair do not even try it with the double blades. I've shaved my head enough that I can shave my face and head in between 5 and 10 minutes. Even so, my expertise with a blade was not enough to save me from nicking my head with the double blade.

I'm going to try some of that shaving lather they have and will review it when I do. I think men with shaved heads are a group of our own and should try to at least help each other out so we aren't walking around with nicks all over our heads!

 "Smoooth!!" 2006-11-13
By Vivek Hurry (Mumbai, India)
Faced with a trend that made no economic sense - pay my barber more each time to cut less hair - I was toying for a long time with the urge to do a full Monty on my pate. The only thing that kept putting me off was the old wives' warning of less hair to comb but more face to wash. That and the logistical problem of how to get it all off ergonomically without actually scalping myself with a cut-throat razor, contorting my arm into a pretzel with a safety razor or vibrating my little grey cells into porridge with an electric razor. I had heard rumors of the HeadBlade but had never seen one during all my travels. A friend assured me that it wasn't an urban legend, so I jumped onto Amazon to look for it, found it in about 2 seconds and ordered it.

When it arrived, I gingerly inspected it and resolved to try it out. I did so, with mixed results the first time. It's all in the wrist work and the pressure. Since then I've used it about 5 times - once a week is all I need - and now thoroughly swear by it. Not a nick to show for my efforts and my kids enjoy kissing my bald pate. I've got myself two packs of replacement blades and a bottle of HeadSlick and am thoroughly enjoying my freedom from hair slavery.

Ever wonder why all the smart aliens in the sf movies are bald? It's natural evolution and HeadBlade just helps you evolve to the next plane of existence. Smoothly.

 "High Quality, Small Size" 2009-12-10
By D. C. Froburg (Haverhill, MA)
After about a month shaving with the #178, I've only noticed a few drawbacks:

The handle is a bit short, if you've large hands, I would suggest you consider getting the #180, which is the same basic no-frills design, just a longer handle. I would say I have slightly smaller than average hands for a guy, and if I had the chance to order again, I would go with the longer handle. The posture you'll need to use the razor is a bit different than a disposable, but easy to get used to. The overall weight is good, heavier than a disposable system razor, but if you want something hefty, look for the HD models, which are a good deal heavier.

Also, be sure to get a stand to hang the razor when not in use, as its generally not a great idea to have the razor's edge so close to a hard surface, as it would be if you just laid the razor down on a counter.

The #178 has a lot of great points though:

A rugged design, all stainless. Changing razors is a breeze, and with the screw down mechanism, you can feel confident the blade is not shifting, nor going anywhere. I would say that the learning curve switching from a modular disposable razor is short and easy to deal with. The available replacement blades are all generally sharper than in the disposables, but the design of the #178 allows for some lee-way, you're not going to cut yourself as long as you use deliberate strokes and take your time.

I personally would recommend getting some Derby Extra DE blades "Derby Extra" Stainless Steel Double Edge Razor Blades, I find they are better than the Merkur blade that comes included, but that's another review. Just know that there is a wide range of replacement blades, and it could mean the difference between a slightly better than average shave, and an exceptional shave.

"The only shaver you will ever need" 2009-11-28
By Neil (Northern Virginia)
I've been using this razor for about a year and a half. This is the same razor as the 34C (not sure why they use two model numbers for the same razor).

When I first started shaving in the 1970's I used a Gillette adjustable safety razor. When I went off to college I was given a Gillette cartridge razor and was told this was "new and better". It's too bad that it's taken me all these years to figure out that the "old" safety razors are better in virtually all respects to the "modern" expensive cartridge razors.

A few things to keep in mind. After using something like a Mach 3, switching to the Merkur HD will take a week or so to get used to. You must be more careful using a classic razor as it is easier to cut your face by accident. However, with a little bit of practice you will get shaves so close you won't believe it's possible with this circa 1904 technology. Trust me, it's true. You will get the best shave of your life.

Here are some tips. Use a good razor blade. I recommend the "Derby Extra". They are very, very good; not too aggressive, just right. I find that one out of 40 blades or thereabouts I get a lousy shave. Probably a manufacturing glitch. Each blade lasts me about 6 shaves. You can buy a pack of 100 blades for about $14 or $15 on Amazon.com. So your total cost in blades for a whole year is about $7 to $8.

Also, buy yourself a good "super badger" shaving brush and some Taylor of Old Bond shaving cream. After you finish shaving rinse your face with cold water and finish by running an Alum Block (Bloc Osma is great) on your face. After a month or so of using these products your skin will look fantastic.

 "Fantastic shave, great product!" 2009-11-26
By Pavel Sorokin (Seattle, WA)
I've used a number of shaving systems: electric shavers (higher-end Braun and Norelco/Philips) and, of course, the ubiquitous multi-blade cartridge razors from Gillette. I was never completely happy because I would nearly always get ingrown hairs and irritated skin on my neck. Also, for some reason it was all but impossible to shave the neck clean (there always were some hairs left on the neck after shaving, no matter how hard I tried). Using irritation-fighting skin creams didn't help a bit. Enter a double-edge Merkur razor... It took me about 2 weeks to get used to the new way of shaving. I did cut myself a few times during that time, especially when I tried to shave in a hurry (never do that with a razor like this!) Now, about 3 weeks later, I'm very happy. I can get a really smooth shave, closer than I've ever had, including in the "problem" areas like the neck. So, no more Mach 3 cartridges for me! I do spend more time shaving now, but hey, I enjoy it, and I know it'll be the time well spent! Now, a few words about the Merkur Classic. It's an extremely well-built razor, pretty heavy, with a great non-slip handle. It feels good just to hold it, unlike those modern plasticky shiny Gillette handles. And as any good tool, it "disappears" in your hand when you shave. I highly recommend this product. Happy shaving!

 "Quite Good, but...." 2009-11-26
By Jonathan Mahoney (Middle Tennessee, USA)
I've been using this razor for about 4 years now. I went from using a Mach 3 with standard shaving gel at the sink to shaving with this (usually with Gillette blades) and Shave Secret shaving oil in the shower. A few observations:

*Pros:

-I went from having a constant red razor burn rash on my neck to basically blemish free skin. I attribute this to GREATLY reduced irritation from shaving. I actually enjoy shaving now. This in and of itself makes this a worthy purchase in my eyes.

-I can and do shave against the grain with this thing, but only after making a first pass with the grain.

-Blades are incredibly cheaper. 10 blades for $5-10 dollars instead of 8 blades for $15. They last longer as well, which makes it an even better deal. I usually get about a month out of each of my blades.

*Cons:

-Learning curve is a bit steeper. You have to train yourself to vary how you hold the razor to follow the curves of your face, the razor won't do it for you. I cut myself the first few times shaving with it. Get a good styptic pencil, and maybe some hydrocortison cream.

-After 4 years of using it in the shower mostly and not drying it off before storing it head down, the chrome has started to flake a bit on the top curved portion. I did ding that part up a little by dropping it a while back, so I'm going to say that's mostly my fault. Still, it's worth noting.

-Don't go really cheap on blades. You can get a pack of 10 for around $3. Don't do it. Trust me. Your face will curse you if you do.

*Bottom line: I'm getting another Murkur razor to replace this one, possibly with a long handle. There's no way I'm going back to the latest fades in shaving. One blade is truly better than 3. Or 4. Or 5. Or 27...

 "Outstanding razor" 2009-11-14
By Vidhyashankar Kannan (India)
After reading so many positive reviews on this razor, I decided to get one and found out that I was lucky to get the Merkur HD. The #178 is the model number given in another part of the globe. This is the same as the Merkur HD or 34c.

The razor is made with precision and finesse. It is so heavy that it shaves with just its weight gliding down the face. Very sturdy and it looks all set to last a lifetime.

The shaves itself are so close that some care has to be taken initially as there is a little learning curve. But it is a beautifully balanced razor. Excellent product!

Used to shave with disposable cartridge razors but never again after trying these. I shave once a week & get 4 weeks out of one side. If you soak them in mineral oil, then the shave gets better & they last longer. Once again, made in Germany lives up to the reputation.

 "Adequate but overpriced" 2009-11-23
By A. L. Kern (Far side of darkness)
If you (like myself) initially came to Amazon first in starting your entry into DE safety razor shaving, STOP right now. Using the search engine of your choice, seek out the several popular shaving blogs and online vendors. Do your homework before you reach for that credit card and read, read, read before making your choices. Merkur makes excellent DE razors that are well liked by novices and experts alike but their blades are only middle of the road in their performance but are priced above their value point. There are multiple choices for razor blades from all over the world (England/Russia/India/Pakistan/Turkey/Japan) and multiple vendors selling sample packs to help you in your search, prices range from $0.10 to $0.50 per blade with shipping, so choose wisely young shaving Jedi.

"Great inexpensive and effective blade" 2009-09-09
By mtbr35
After having grown up using electric shavers, then finally moving over to the "modern" razors in an attempt to get a closer shave, my shave was still horrible. 5 o'clock shadow at 2 o'clock, maybe you can relate. I took the plunge back to an old fashioned Double-Edge razor, I got the Merkur Classic and these blades. It took me about 2 months to fully learn technique with Doube-Edge razors, and I did nick myself quite a few times with this blade, probably every time until I learned proper technique. The nicks aren't bad at all, they're small and unnoticeable after you're done shaving and its just part of the learning process. You just need to realize that if you take the DE plunge, you are going to go through a learning phase.

Your first month your shave will probably not be better than it was before, but after you get the technique down with the grain, you can start doing passes across the grain, and then against the grain. Note: when shaving with a DE, you need to do reduction passes in order, so for example, you do with the grain, across the grain, and if you're comfortable with it against the grain (in that order). This is how you get the best shave of your life.

So when you start out, stick with going with the grain for all your passes for the first week or two. When you get comfortable doing it with the grain, add a pass or two across the grain. Then gradually over time you can add against the grain. It should not hurt going across or against the grain, if it does, you need to do another reduction pass (usually with or maybe across grain) to get the hair shorter and more manageable, if that doesn't help then avoid against the grain as some people are super sensitive (for example I don't go against the grain on my neck, I'm super sensitive there). Good luck and enjoy your journey to the closet shave you'll ever have.

"So glad I got this Merkur razor!" 2009-12-02
By J. Rens
This razor is my first double edge safety razor. I wanted to go to a safety razor because I wanted a close shave without spending a ton on blades. I have had this razor for a few months now and I cant find a single thing wrong with it. I like the long handle because it makes it easier to hold when your hands are wet during shaving. I like the solid three piece design. It has a nice heavy feel to it. I cant see how a person could damage this razor, this one should last you a lifetime.

 "Fantastic Shave!" 2009-11-12
By T. Higgins
The razor takes a bit of getting used to when you switch over from a regular Mach 5, but after a week or so, I picked up on how to use it, and I'm getting extremely close shaves, with no razor burn. These are also much easier to trim with than one of those Gillette or Schick monstrosities. Before I got this razor, I did not look forward to shaving. Now, however, shaving is relaxing and pleasant. Hot shaving cream and a good shave are great right before going to bed. Get a Merkur!

"Closer shave for a lesser cost." 2009-11-09
By N. Kurland (VA)
Before purchasing this, I was going through a box of 8 Mach3/Fusion/etc cartridges a month, at the cost of $15 or more. The cartridges gave a very poor shave, and it was nearly impossible to get 'close' without some serious razor burn. Money was not my main focus for buying this, but when you realize you're spending $2-4 a cartridge for a mediocre shave, the Merkur becomes much more appealing.

I researched brands and models before settling on this one. There are a number of reasons I like this one versus others, but the most important for me was the longer shaft (at ~3.5). I've tried shorter shafted razors, and found myself really bearing down causing nicks and razor burn. The longer shaft reinforced the need to drag the razor down the face instead of applying excess pressure towards the face. I do need a second stroke against the grain to really get a close shave, but I haven't nicked myself on the 180 after a year of use.

In general, the blades are a huge savings over the cartridges that are so prevalent today. Using Merkur blades, the cost is about $0.50 for the same durability as a Fusion cartridge (at least for my case this holds true). The only cost on top of this is oil and soap, but I figure I would be using that anyways. If you're on the fence about buying this, it's worth it for the closer shave.

 "Old school shaving" 2009-10-28
By L. Blasiman (Canton, Ohio USA)
I've used a brush and shaving soap/cream for many years but always with whatever the latest Gillette was. But I decided to try an old style safety razor instead of what you get at the drug store and this is the one I bought. So far so good. I like the longer length and the weight and balance feel good in your hand as you're shaving. Because you have to slow down a little it makes shaving feel like more an event than the Fusion does. I don't know if this is good or bad, but for me that's the way the way it is. The quality of the razor is also evident.

"New to DE Safety Razors" 2009-10-21
By D. L. Hallengren (Iowa, USA)
I decided to purchase this razor to get rid of my mach 17 because I was tired of buying replacement cartridges. I'm new to using a safety razor and here are some hints:

-Always wet shave, dont try to shave dry, even small areas or touch ups. This thing will eat your skin if you do.

-Be careful with bumps. My mach 28 would irritate my neck bumps, safety razors will cut them off.

I've found the Merkur 180 to be a good razor overall. I love the weight of it, it helps newbies not cut themselves up (too bad). I also like the length and grip of the handle. When wet shaving I've never been concerned about it sliding out of my grasp or twisting around in my hand.

The one fault, and the reason it gets only four stars is that because the razor has a decent sized head it's nearly impossible to trim my upper lip to my nose. I'm left with a really small area (really, really small) I need to cut with something else. It's a small problem but is a bit of a hassle having to get such a good shave and leave one area out.
